We started out the month of July with a bang. The Annual Red, White and Blue Tournament was played over the weekend of July 3rd and 4th. Competitors played 6 holes from the Red Tees, 6 holes from the White Tees and 6 holes from the Blue Tees. We had a good crowd of players and divided the field up into 3 flights of men and a ladies flight. In each of the Men's Flights, the scores were relatively close. In Flight 1, Vince Williams fired a score of 71 to win the gross title. Freddy Powers posted a score of 63 to capture the Net Title in Flight 1. In Flight 2, James Morrison posted a score of 72 (even par) and won the gross title by 6 shots over Kirk Hudgens. James also qualified for the Tournament of Champions with an overall low net score of 61 (for the entire field). Joe Bianchi posted a net score of 63 to clinch the victory on the net side in Flight 2. In Flight 3, only 3 shots separated first place gross from third place gross. John's score of 86 edged out Jack Davenport by 1 shot and Lonnie Bowman by 2 shots. Phil Brazell led the way in the net scoring by posting a 68; one shot better than Chip Collins who posted a 69 In the Ladies Flight, Natalie Huff's 83 led the way in the gross scoring. On the net side of the equation, Betsy Duffy's score of 64 was 2 shots better than Weslyn Hutto who posted a 66. We would like to thank everyone who played in the Red, White and Blue Tournament. We hope everyone had a great 4th of July Weekend. If you would like to view the complete results from the Red, White and Blue Tourney, please click on the Tournament Results Link above.
The Fore Club Scramble was played on Saturday, July 10th. We had great weather and a wonderful turnout for this really fun event. Teams were comprised of two players and each player was only allowed to use four clubs in a captain's choice (scramble) format. The field was broken down into a Men's and a Ladies Flight with teams competing for both gross and net prizes. Once all the dust settled, the team of Rich Houghton and Paul Turner emerged victorious in the Gross Division. Rich and Paul fired a wonderful score of 8 under par, 64 to edge out Sam Hiller and Pete Clough by two shots. Finishing third in the Gross Division was Ronnie Johnson and Danny Stubbs who posted a 68. On the Net side, Chip Collins and Ron Duncan played extremely well and posted a score of 59.5 and were 3/4 of a shot better than Lonnie Richard and Bill Duffy who posted a score of 60.25. Joey Huckaby and Gerry Coleman finished in third place with a net score of 62.
In the Ladies Flight, Lauralee Hansen and Marty Broadnax posted a total of 5 over par, 77 to take home first place honors in the Gross Division. In the Net Division, Debbie Richard and Patti Melotte were too tough to handle as they fired a net score of 61.25 and coasted to victory over Betsy Duffy and Cindy Keating who posted a total of 64.75.
Immediately following the conclusion of the Fore Club Scramble, we began preparation for The Annual Parent-Child Tournament. As always, a great, widely diverse age field set out to see who could emerge victorious in a two-person captain's choice field. Some of the teams were separated by almost a combined 100 years of age, but that is what makes this event so special. The field was broken into two flights - The PGA Tour Flight and the Nationwide Flight. In The PGA Tour Flight, Paul and Ryan Turner posted a score of 7 under par, 65 to finish in first place in the Gross Division. Paul and Ryan were two shots better than Joe Watson and Shawn McKinney who fired a total of 5 under par, 67. Harry Lee Thompson flew his son, Jeff in all the way from Texas and it was well worth the trip as the twosome posted a net score of 61.25 and captured first place by 2.25 shots over the father-son duo of Dennis Waller and Jonathan Waller.

James and J.R. Morrison posted a net score of 66.5 and emerged victorious in the net side of the Nationwide Flight. July came to a close on the Tournament Front with the British Open Pick Your Pro Event. Like all of our Pick Your Pro Tournaments, competitors selected a Pro playing in The British Open out of a hat and their net score from Saturday or Sunday, July 17th & 18th was combined with the Professional's score from St. Andrews on Sunday. Scores were really close and we even had a storm (making the weather much like that in England) that forced a few players to cut their day short. In the end, Fred Stanton fired a net score of 68 and paired with Trevor Immelman who also posted a 68 to edge out Jack Mitchell and Tom Lehman, and Peter Chesney and Alvaro Quiros by one shot. News & Tournament Information from June
The 2010 U.S. Open Pick Your Pro Event The
U.S. Open Pick Your Pro was held over the weekend of June 19th and
20th. As with all our Pick Your Pro Events, the competitor’s net score
was combined with a player’s score from Pebble Beach on Sunday, and the
lowest combined total was deemed the winner. We had a nice field of
nearly 50 players for The U.S.Open Pick Your Pro Event.
As the
contestants pulled names out of the hat, everyone hoped they drew Dustin
Johnson, Tiger Woods, or Phil Mickelson. After a long Sunday night of
scores coming in from Pebble Beach, our winner was determined.
Marty
Broadnax picked Matt Kuchar out of the hat and thanks to a net 66
posted by Marty and a 68 (The low score of the day at Pebble Beach),
their score of 134 was two shots better than the rest of the field.
Chip Collins drew Shaun Micheel (who double eagled the par 5 sixth hole
at Pebble Beach on Sunday) and their combined total of 136 was good
enough for solo second place. We had a two way tie for third place as
James Morrison Paired with Tiger Woods, and Bill Robbins paired with Jim
Furyk to post scores of 139.
We would like to thank everyone
who participated in the 2010 U.S. Open Pick Your Pro Event and
congratulate all of the winners. To view all of the results from the
event, please click on the Tournament Results Link above.
The 2010 Member-Guest The 2010
Member-Guest Tournament was held over the weekend of Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, June 4th, 5th, and 6th. We had a wonderful weekend
weather-wise, and Nicholas and maintenance crew had the greens rolling
perfectly for the event. Six flights of competitors had one mission –
win their respective flight, and advance to The Championship Shoot-Out.
However, a few obstacles stood in their way. First, they had to
outplay five other teams in their flights, and secondly they had to get
out of bed each morning after two fabulous parties on Friday and
Saturday evening at The Woodlands.
After a practice round on
Friday afternoon and a Member-Guest welcome party on Friday night, the
competitors arrived at The Woodlands on Saturday morning, ate a filling
breakfast and prepared for 18 holes of round-robin match play. After
their first two matches, the teams enjoyed a huge lunch and went out for
their third round matches. Saturday came to a close with a putting
contest and a party Saturday evening that featured Prime Rib, Pasta and
Baked Potato Stations and many other goodies. We were also entertained
by several of the participants (especially Chad Gamble, Joey Huckaby,
Kenny Brown, and David Smith) performing live in an open karaoke
display.
Sunday morning came early for a few of the competitors,
but all of the teams buckled down and began their fourth and fifth round
matches. After they completed Round 5, the contestants enjoyed lunch
as the scores were tallied to determine which six teams would advance to
The Championship Shoot-Out.
In The Palmer Flight, David Smith
and Brad Tolson scored 60 total points to edge out Gerry Coleman and
C.R. Pardee who finished second with 57 points.

In The
Nicklaus Flight, Chris Dionne and Will Forrest posted a total of 59
points and won a tightly knit flight by one point over Jim Post and Phil
Jenkins.

In The
Player Flight, Paul Turner and Mark Lloyd were way to tough for the rest
of the flight, accumulating 64 points and winning the flight by 10
shots over James Morrison and Steve Hatchell who posted 54 points.

In The
Hogan Flight, Freddy Powers and John Price won 65 points and scored a 14
point victory over Jerry Huckaby and Charlie Smoak who finished second
in the flight with 51 points.

In The
Snead Flight, James Shirer and Matt Younginer led the way with 66 points
and managed to hold off Bill Jones and Tom Haycox who accumulated 59
points.

In The
Jones Flight, David Voyles and Gene Todd were too tough posting 69
points and winning their flight by a whopping 10 points over Darrell
Neal and Tommy Deese.

Once all of
The Shoot-Out Competitors were determined, all six teams headed to the
10th hole to begin the process of crowning The 2010 Member-Guest
Champions. On hole # 10, both James Shirer and Freddy Powers got really
serious. They both had to enter the lake to hit their second shots.
Both of them executed perfect shots out of the water. However, the
putting green proved to be a tough spot for the teams of Paul Turner and
Mark Lloyd and James Shirer and Matt Younginer, as both teams were
eliminated by making net bogies.

The
Shoot-Out then moved to hole # 19 - par 3 from # 10 tee box to the
putting green. David Voyles and Gene Todd advanced to the final hole
with a par, and all of the rest of the teams had to go to a chip-off to
determine who would join David and Gene on hole # 18. Chris Dionne and
Will Forrest knocked it closest and advanced to the final hole. On hole
# 18, all of the competitors were sitting on the green with a chance at
net birdie. David, Will and Chris all gave it good efforts, but missed
their birdie putt. Then Gene Todd stood over his net birdie putt and
sank a left to right, 25 foot bomb to secure the title for team Voyles
and Todd.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in The
2010 Member-Guest Tournament and congratulate all of our flight winners
and runner-ups. We would also like to thank the Sharon Everett and the
entire Food and Beverage Staff, Nicholas Ramirez and entire Maintenance
Crew, and the golf staff for putting on a great show this year.
