Ladies Golf Clinics
Beginning on Wednesday evening, July 28th and on Thursday, July 29th, Kimberlee Lawson will be holding a Ladies Golf Clinic.  The Wednesday Evening Sessions will begin at 6:00 PM and the Thursday Morning Sessions will begin at 10:00 AM.  The cost is $10 per clinic and each session will last approximately 1 hour.  You may attend either session.  The clinics will run for 4 weeks and focus on all aspects of the game.  To learn more about Kimberlee's Golf Clinics for Ladies, please click here

We started out the month of July with a bang.  The Annual Red, White and Blue Tournament was played over the weekend of July 3rd and 4th.  Competitors played 6 holes from the Red Tees, 6 holes from the White Tees and 6 holes from the Blue Tees.  We had a good crowd of players and divided the field up into 3 flights of men and a ladies flight.

In each of the Men's Flights, the scores were relatively close.  In Flight 1, Vince Williams fired a score of 71 to win the gross title.  Freddy Powers posted a score of 63 to capture the Net Title in Flight 1.  In Flight 2, James Morrison posted a score of 72 (even par) and won the gross title by 6 shots over Kirk Hudgens.  James also qualified for the Tournament of Champions with an overall low net score of 61 (for the entire field).  Joe Bianchi posted a net score of 63 to clinch the victory on the net side in Flight 2.  In Flight 3, only 3 shots separated first place gross from third place gross.  John's score of 86 edged out Jack Davenport by 1 shot and Lonnie Bowman by 2 shots.  Phil Brazell led the way in the net scoring by posting a 68; one shot better than Chip Collins who posted a 69

In the Ladies Flight, Natalie Huff's 83 led the way in the gross scoring.  On the net side of the equation, Betsy Duffy's score of 64 was 2 shots better than Weslyn Hutto who posted a 66.

We would like to thank everyone who played in the Red, White and Blue Tournament.  We hope everyone had a great 4th of July Weekend.  If you would like to view the complete results from the Red, White and Blue Tourney, please click on the Tournament Results Link above.

The Fore Club Scramble was played on Saturday, July 10th.  We had great weather and a wonderful turnout for this really fun event.  Teams were comprised of two players and each player was only allowed to use four clubs in a captain's choice (scramble) format.  The field was broken down into a Men's and a Ladies Flight with teams competing for both gross and net prizes.  Once all the dust settled, the team of Rich Houghton and Paul Turner emerged victorious in the Gross Division.  Rich and Paul fired a wonderful score of 8 under par, 64 to edge out Sam Hiller and Pete Clough by two shots.  Finishing third in the Gross Division was Ronnie Johnson and Danny Stubbs who posted a 68.  On the Net side, Chip Collins and Ron Duncan played extremely well and posted a score of 59.5 and were 3/4 of a shot better than Lonnie Richard and Bill Duffy who posted a score of 60.25.  Joey Huckaby and Gerry Coleman finished in third place with a net score of 62.

In the Ladies Flight, Lauralee Hansen and Marty Broadnax posted a total of 5 over par, 77 to take home first place honors in the Gross Division.  In the Net Division, Debbie Richard and Patti Melotte were too tough to handle as they fired a net score of 61.25 and coasted to victory over Betsy Duffy and Cindy Keating who posted a total of 64.75.

Immediately following the conclusion of the Fore Club Scramble, we began preparation for The Annual Parent-Child Tournament.  As always, a great, widely diverse age field set out to see who could emerge victorious in a two-person captain's choice field.  Some of the teams were separated by almost a combined 100 years of age, but that is what makes this event so special.

The field was broken into two flights - The PGA Tour Flight and the Nationwide Flight.  In The PGA Tour Flight, Paul and Ryan Turner posted a score of 7 under par, 65 to finish in first place in the Gross Division.  Paul and Ryan were two shots better than Joe Watson and Shawn McKinney who fired a total of 5 under par, 67.  Harry Lee Thompson flew his son, Jeff in all the way from Texas and it was well worth the trip as the twosome posted a net score of 61.25 and captured first place by 2.25 shots over the father-son duo of Dennis Waller and Jonathan Waller.

               Harry Lee & Jeff Thompson

In The Nationwide Flight, Lee and Dennis Catoe (a combined 145 years of golf experience) posted a score of 2 under par, 70 and edged out Joe and Chris Bianchi by one shot to capture first place gross.  James and J.R. Morrison posted a net score of 66.5 and emerged victorious in the net side of the Nationwide Flight.  James and J.R.'s socre was 3 shots better than Tommy and Hunter Reilly's score of 69.5.

We would like to thank all of the participants who took part in both the Fore Club Scramble and The parent Child Tournament over the weekend of July 10th and 11th.  We would like to congratulate all of the winners from both events.  If you would like to view a full tournament recap, please click on the tournament results link above.

July came to a close on the Tournament Front with the British Open Pick Your Pro Event.  Like all of our Pick Your Pro Tournaments, competitors selected a Pro playing in The British Open out of a hat and their net score from Saturday or Sunday, July 17th & 18th was combined with the Professional's score from St. Andrews on Sunday.  Scores were really close and we even had a storm (making the weather much like that in England) that forced a few players to cut their day short.  In the end, Fred Stanton fired a net score of 68 and paired with Trevor Immelman who also posted a 68 to edge out Jack Mitchell and Tom Lehman, and Peter Chesney and Alvaro Quiros by one shot.  To view all of the results from the British Open Pick Your Pro Event, please click on the Tournament Results link above.

The Senior Summer Bash will be played on Tuesday, August 10th.  The format for the event will be four-man captain's choice and we are asking that everyone sign-up individually.  Teams will be paired by the golf shop by A-B-C-D Players.  You may bring one guest and we will make sure the he gets paired with you.

Senior Interclub Information

We have three matches left to improve our standing. These matches are: August 12 at Ponderosa, September 9 at home against Lexington, and October 7 at Lancaster.

The Senior Interclub Bash
Last year, the Bash, the League’s end-of-year tournament, was expanded to two courses. This year, the board of directors has voted to go back to the one-course format, meaning participation will be limited to 120 players, 12 from each team.  The Bash is an individual competition using the Stapleford system. This year’s tournament will be played during the first week in November. The exact date and the course for the event will be determined after member clubs submit bids for the event.  The Woodlands plans to submit a bid to host the event.
The 12 players to participate will be selected based on the number of matches played during the season. If two or more players tie for the 12th spot, selection will be based on points won during the season.

Scoring Leaders
Again this year, there will be a prize for the top two scorers on the team during the season. With three matches to go, the following players are the leading scorers:

Ken Grimm - 10.5
Tom Truitt - 9.5
Joe Watson - 9.5
Barry Cooke - 9.5
John Southern - 9.5
Jack Bonniville - 9.0

Players scoring 3 points in a match will have an opportunity to win a special prize in a drawing. If a player scores 3 points in multiple matches, his name will be placed in the drawing the same number of times. Players who have scored three points in matches to date are:

Jack Bonniville  (2)
Ron Cecil  (2)
Ken Grimm  (2)
John Southern  (2)
Don Brooks
Bob Hubble
Stuart Smith
Tom Truitt

If you have questions, suggestions, corrections, or comments, contact me at ttruitt@sc.rr.com.

Once again, our next Interclub Match will be on August 12th at Ponderosa Golf Club .

The schedule of our matches is listed below:

August 12-at Ponderosa
September 9-Lexington at WCC
October 7-at Lancaster

A sign-up sheet for matches will be posted in the club house and on the internet 2-3 weeks before each match. The first 16 persons to sign up will represent WCC in that match. If we have more than 16 wanting to play, we can accommodate additional players at home matches only. We can do this by having a tournament within the match with only WCC players.

In addition to the Interclub matches, WCC hosts a club senior tournament each month. You also have the opportunity to play in invitational tournaments in clubs around Columbia. All of these events are handled by sign-up sheets in the club house or on the internet.

You are encouraged to play in our matches and all senior events at WCC.

LGA

Play Days
You may play your play day on any day Tuesday through Sunday.  If you play more than once during the week, you can only turn in one card.  All cards will be picked up on Wednesdays by Dianne Lekovish for the previous week.  Basic information:  all cards must be filled out completely and LEGIBLY, golfer, gross, putts, total, handicap, net.  All cards must be dated, signed, and attested.  Any exceptions and the card will be rejected.  No more than 2 golfers per score card.  You must play with an LGA member.  Same information for 9 hole golfers.  You can only turn in a play day card for either 9 holes or 18, not both, however, you can play the front one day, the back the next, and use that as your 18 if you are an 18 hole golfer.  The Wednesday group is going to continue, so if you want to play on Wednesday, please sign up by Tuesdays.  All pairings will be done by the pro shop.  If you do not want to be paired randomly, please do not sign up to play with the Wednesday group.  Starting this Wednesday, March 3rd the tee time will be 10 AM.  As the weather warms, Dianne will work with Tom to get an earlier tee time.  We will once again be doing pennies for putts, but we will track these and collect at year end.

LGA Member-Member Tournament - Saturday & Sunday, April 24th & 25th
The 2010 LGA Member-Member Tournament was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 24th & 25th.
Despite a rather uninviting forecast, we were able to complete all 36 holes of four different formats.  The competitors played 9 holes of captain's choice, 9 holes of Texas scramble, 9 holes of best ball, and 9 holes of modified alternate shot.  We had 12 teams for the event, and we awarded prizes for 1st and 2nd low gross and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd low net.

Once all of the scores were turned in, Julie Snider and Suzann Bartley fired a wonderful 36-hole total of 143 (1 under par) to take home the first place honors in the Gross Division.  Suzann and Julie finished 9 shots clear of Natalie Huff and Lauralee Hansen who posted a very respectable score of 152.

In the net competition, Nancy Martin and Marty Broadnax edged out two other teams by 2 shots to capture the overall Net Title.  Nancy and Marty posted a score of 127, to take home top honors.  Finishing in second place in the Net Division was the team of Debbie Richard and Patti Melotte who fired a two-day total of 129 and edged out Diana and Ruthann Como on a match of cards for 3rd place.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2010 LGA Member-Member Tournament and congratulate all of the winners.  We would also like to thank Sharon and the Food and Beverage Staff for the wonderful lunch on Sunday and Sandy Forbes for hosting the lunch at her house on Saturday.

Cat Fights

We will have 3 Catfights remaining this year.  They are on the tournament schedule, but the dates are on 6/26, 7/24, and 8/21.  These tournaments are a lot of fun, so make sure you sign up to participate.

LGA Meetings
Meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of the following months, July, August, September, and October.  Those dates are, 7/21, 8/18, 9/15, 10/20.  Also, we are going to start having dinner at the meetings.  We will order prior to the start of the meeting and hopefully be finishing up the meeting as the food is served.  Everyone will have to pay for their own dinner, but it will give the group a chance to socialize and again attempt to strengthen and grow our LGA.

Dues
The annual dues are $30.00 per person and are due now.  In order to qualify for most improved award at end of year, your dues must be paid by 3/31/10.  Please make checks payable to Woodlands LGA.  You may give your check to Natalie Huff or drop in the box in the locker room.

Communication
I will continue to send emails out as things pop up or as reminders, however, if you or another member you know, would also like to receive a phone call, please let Lauralee Hansen or Cheryl Munn know and they will add to their phone lists.  Also, Betsy Duffy will be our Sunshine Lady, so if you know of anyone who is sick or just needs a note, please let her know so she can send something out on behalf of the LGA.

I think this covers everything.  If anyone has any questions of knows of anything I didn’t cover, please let me know.  I do not have our 2 new members on this email but will forward it tonight in case anyone talks to them.

Thanks, and go have a ball!

Maintenance

The following is an article written by James Francis Moore that appeared in the USGA's November-December Edition of the "Greens Section Record."  Please take a moment to read through it.

For the purpose of this article, consider the following definitions of good players and good golfers. Good players have low handicaps, usually hit the ball a mile, and occasionally post very low scores. Good golfers fill divots, repair ball marks, and practice good etiquette each and every time they are on the course. Anyone who has ever worked in golf course maintenance will verify that, unfortunately, the two terms are not mutually inclusive. In fact, good players often are the least likely to be considerate of the games of lesser mortals. This is not to say that all good players are bad golfers. In fact, practicing good etiquette on the course seems to be slipping across the board, regardless of handicap. And the timing could not be worse. All but the wealthiest courses are finding it harder to make a profit these days, with large cost increases in fuel, fertilizer, and labor. Since labor almost always represents the largest budget item, it typically is the first to be targeted when budget reductions are necessary. When forced to choose, most courses with reduced available labor place a higher priority on agronomic necessities than the niceties of completing tasks that good golfers normally do for themselves. Unless we can somehow encourage players to become better golfers, the overall quality of many courses will decline rapidly during tough economic times. For those who wish to become better golfers, here are the ways you can help your course the most.

FILLING DIVOTS
Golfers often ask if they should replace their divots, fill them with whatever has been provided in the divot buckets, or just leave them for the crew. The best option is to fill the divot with the material provided by the maintenance staff.  Typically, this is straight sand, although occasionally a sand/seed mixture is used by courses using cool-season turfgrasses.  Replacing a divot is the second-best option, assuming the divot is deep enough to include a significant amount of soil. Without the soil, the divot quickly dries out and is pulled back out of the ground during the next mowing.
Do — Fill divot holes with the material provided by the maintenance staff.
Don’t — Overfill the hole, which results in a sand mound that can dull or damage the mowing units.

BALL MARKS
Few aspects of etiquette generate more discussion than the fixing of ball marks (at least now that most courses no longer allow spiked shoes), and even superintendents disagree on the best method of ball mark repair. The inability to agree on a single best method stems from the fact that ball marks are not all the same. On soft greens, a shot that descends from a very steep angle produces a deep, almost circular ball mark. On the same green, a shot that comes in low and hard will produce an elongated tearing of the green, and it often removes a plug of grass and soil. Ball marks on soft greens take time to repair properly. Compacted soil needs to be lifted gently, and the raised sides of the ball mark need to be gently pushed back toward the center. The elongated mark needs to be kneaded back together by pushing in from the sides, stretching the turf rather than tearing it. Replacing removed turf seldom accomplishes much, so it is best to leave it out. In contrast, very firm greens can resist ball marks so well that they can be hard to find at all. On such greens the marks will be slight indentations that require a minimum of effort to repair. These marks can be repaired with a very slight lifting to restore smoothness.
Do — Restore surface smoothness by gently pushing from the sides and, in some cases, gently lifting the compressed area.
Don’t — Aggressively twist (as is so often done by pros on national television), which does more harm than good.

BUNKERS
Among the first rules of etiquette taught to young players are to rake the bunker smooth of footprints and repair divots after a shot. Unfortunately, either through laziness or disdain, many players refuse to extend this courtesy to their fellow golfers. Shoving sand around with your foot or a clubhead is no substitute for raking. However, for those who are willing to rake, it is important to do the job correctly. Avoid pulling sand down the bunker face when raking. Doing so results in very shallow sand on the face, leading to exposed soil, which is easily eroded. Also, many bunkers are constructed with liners or lining material installed on the slopes to reduce the problems of sand erosion. These liners should always be covered with at least 2 to 3 inches of sand. It is equally important to avoid pulling sand out of the bunker and onto the adjacent turf. Piles of sand around the bunker edges can cause serious damage to mowing equipment. Sand raked out of the bunker will also result in a poorly defined bunker edge, making it difficult to determine whether the ball is in or out of the hazard. Although most players are concerned only with how the ball got into the bunker and how they are going to get it out, good golfers know that it is important to consider how to get themselves in and out of the bunker as well. Climbing in and out of the steep side of a bunker can cause significant damage to liners and the sod on the bunker face. Entry and exit should always be from the low side.
Do — Push sand up the bunker face and enter and exit from the low side of the bunker.
Don’t — Climb out of the high side of the bunker, which causes damage to liners and grass faces.

CARTS
Nothing causes more damage to golf courses than the improper use of golf carts.  Superintendents expend many labor hours repairing this damage and trying to prevent it in the first place. The problems are many, and most could easily be prevented with common sense. One of the most common is players driving their carts on the banks of tees and the banks and approaches of greens. Driving too close to the greens is particularly troublesome, since the wear and tear on the turf in this area directly affects playing quality. These areas are frequently irrigated and therefore more susceptible to damage. Ropes, signs, and painted lines are all too frequently ignored by players who are too lazy to walk from the path to the green. Unthinking cart drivers frequently pull two wheels off the path, presumably to make room for other carts to pass. Since they invariably do this next to greens and tees, it is no coincidence that ruts are commonplace in these areas immediately adjacent to the path. Although this is a great practice if you have a fl at on the highway, it is unnecessary on the golf course. Seldom will someone need to pass a parked cart. Should a marshal, drink cart, or maintenance vehicle need to get by, they can easily pull off the path and around the parked cart.
Do — Avoid wet areas, stay off green and tee banks, and follow all directional signs, ropes, and lines.
Don’t — Pull half off the path, as it is unnecessary and causes damage to high-visibility areas.

ROPES
Ropes are a necessary evil on every course that receives heavy play. No superintendent enjoys putting ropes up. They are constant maintenance headaches.  Unfortunately, they are the most effective means of directing cart traffic and protecting areas of the course that are prone to damage.  Many golfers step on the ropes rather than over them — presumably in an effort not to trip. Unfortunately, this practice pulls out the stakes that the ropes are attached to, leaving the rope lying on the ground. Someone on the maintenance staff then needs to fix the stakes and retighten the rope.
Do — Pay attention to ropes and the areas they are intended to protect.
Don’t — Step on a rope — step over it.

SMALL THINGS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
There are many other small things golfers can do to help their course play and look better, and in the process free up the maintenance staff for more essential work.
• Picking up broken tees helps prevent damage to costly mower reels.
• Not overfilling trash containers prevents trash from blowing across the course.
• Replacing a sign or rope stake that has been knocked down keeps the course looking neat and helps prevent damage.
• If an irrigation system leak is spotted, let a maintenance staff worker know about it so it can be fixed before turf damage occurs from traffic through the area.
• Lose the herd mentality when driving your cart — avoid following the same path of the carts before you.
• Avoid taking divots on your practice swings.
• Chip to the chipping green — not the practice putting green.
• When practicing putting, avoid standing in one place for extended periods — doing so can cause damage to the green.
• Put bunker rakes where the superintendent has directed them to be placed.

CONCLUSION
Part of the inspiration for this article stems from a group of men with whom I am fortunate enough to play golf regularly. Not only are these men good players, they are outstanding golfers. It is a real pleasure to watch them work their way around the course during a round. They don’t just avoid damaging the course; they improve it in the process of enjoying their round! They leave the course better than they found it. And contrary to what you might think, none of this results in slow play. Imagine your course receiving 30,000 rounds per year from golfers like these fellows.

JIM MOORE is director of the USGA Green Section’s Construction Education Program.

We greatly appreciate everyone's help in making the Woodlands look better.  By helping out with the basics listed above you will greatly imporve the playing conditions at The Woodlands for yourself and fellow members.

Thank you and enjoy the course,

I would like to congratulate our 3.0 ladies’ team, “Highly Strung”, for finishing first in their flight and advancing on to the City Tournament.

Saturday the ladies had a close match with a team out of Longcreek, but went on to win 3-2 in matches. Ruth Rayman/Cindy DePalma won #1 doubles in 2 sets. Linda Reed won the #1 singles in a 3rd set tiebreaker, and Marie Ouellet won #2 singles in 2 sets. In the meantime, the #2 doubles (Anna Petitgout/Becky Marchi) and #3 doubles (Sissy Childress/Jennie Flanders) did not lose without a battle. They only fell short by a few points, both finishing in 3rd set tiebreakers.

Sunday morning they went on to face a tough Greenview team. They finished with a 4-1 victory, but that came with a lot of hard fought battles ending in 3rd set tiebreakers. #1 singles (Linda Reed), #1 doubles (Anna Petitgout/Laurie Narboni) and #2 doubles (Ruth Rayman/Cindy DePalma) came out on top winning their 3rd set tiebreakers. Becky Marchi/Margaret Glassman had a smooth victory at #3 doubles, while Marie Ouellet had a tough loss at #2 singles.

Sunday afternoon, the ladies faced the toughest team of the season in the finals of the City tournament. This team out of Columbia Tennis Center won the State Championship title in the Spring Season. We lost all 5 matches but very close battles. These ladies fought hard, and I am proud of all of their efforts. They ended the season as the 2nd place team in the entire city of Columbia. What a great season you all had! Thanks to Becky Marchi and Margaret Glassman for their hard work as captains, and thanks to all the teammates for making it such a wonderful season.  Keep up the hard work!!

Congratulations to Bob Marchi's 6.0 Sr. Team for competing so well at the Sectional Mixed Doubles Tournament this past weekend in Mobile, Alabama.  The Sectional Tournament brings in state championship teams from 9 southern states.

Friday, they swept all 3 courts to defeat a team from Huntsville, Alabama 3-0. Saturday, they had another 3-0 victory against a team from Tennessee.  Sunday, they had to play the toughest team in their bracket from Arkansas, and couldn't quit pull it through. They were able to win one court in a 3rd set tiebreaker, but lost the other 2 courts in close sets.
